Santa Barbara Community Garden Answers Client's Needs
CSI's Santa Barbara Day Reporting Center (DRC) has been the recipient of a mini-grant from Monsanto as well as in-kind donations resulting in a garden which provides both service opportunities and a rich bounty of fresh food. The garden has proven especially meaningful to Howard, a DRC client who must follow a strict diet due to renal failure. Much of what is grown in the garden supports Howard's dietary needs, and tending the garden with Community Service Coordinator Michael Armour provides Howard time to discuss their common interests in writing and art.
The garden was created by Case Manager Cheyenne Harty and his wife, Jeanmarie Harty who together put many hours into clearing, planting and harvesting. Their hard work and dedication has resulted in additional interest from local Monsanto employees who will allow it to grow and offer future DRC clients like Howard a place to reconnect with a healthy lifestyle and to their community.
